Do You Need a Double Vanity for Your Bathroom?

When planning a home remodel, knowing the pros and cons of incorporating a certain feature or element is imperative. If you are looking to upgrade the appearance and functionality of your bathroom, one of the important decisions you have to make is whether to add a double vanity.

Space and Purpose

One of the most important things you need to think about when adding double vanity is the space. Space can be an issue between double vanities and storage spaces. While two sinks may fit in a 48-inch wide space, a second sink may use up all your counter space. This also makes it impossible for you to add under-the-counter drawers, especially since you will need the space for your plumbing fixtures. Meanwhile, a 60-inch vanity space may allow about 12 inches of counter space and a small 12-inch set of drawers in between the two sinks. Even so, the counter and storage space will still be limited. As such, you will need a 72-inch or more to have the space needed for a double vanity and storage.

Additionally, you have to consider the purpose of your remodeling project. Many homeowners invest in bathroom remodeling to help increase the resale value of their homes. To attract potential home buyers, you need to make sure your bathroom is large enough for a double vanity with adequate counter and storage space.

Habits and Functionality

If space and resale value are not a concern, then you will need to consider your habits and the functionality of your bathroom. If you live on your own, you may not need a double vanity and would benefit the most from having extra bathroom space. If you are living with your partner, however, ask yourself whether the both of you are using the sink at the same time. While this doesn’t happen most of the time, you may find a double vanity to be useful. Both of you can do your morning routine of washing your face or brushing your teeth without sharing the same sink.

Fundamentally, the most important factor you should plan for is that both people can stand side by side while still having a decent amount of counter space and mirror access. In some cases, the best solution is to have one sink in the middle with a larger full-width mirror. The sink is installed in the center with a set of drawers on each side for storage.
