Avoiding the Most Common Attic Insulation Mistakes

A well-insulated attic is crucial to the long-term health and performance of your roof. Not only that, but it also keeps indoor comfort in check without putting too much stress on your HVAC system. To enjoy these benefits, installing insulation in your attic must be done correctly. So, you must avoid these common mistakes.

Failing to Seal the Attic Floor

Your home’s energy envelope consists of your home’s exterior walls, window and entry door openings, and attic floor. All of these components must be airtight to ensure the effectiveness of the insulation. Make sure to inspect the attic floor, and check the area between the boards and openings created for pipes, wiring and ductwork. If there are leaks, apply caulk around the gaps, or add more rigid insulation.

Blocking Roof Vents With Insulation

If you are planning a roof replacement, see to it that the local roofer you hire follows the correct insulation installation procedures. There have been many instances in which insulation covers the vents, preventing them from doing their function. When this happens, cool, fresh air cannot enter the vents underneath the roof’s eaves. Heat and moisture begin to accumulate in the attic as a result, compromising your roof and your home.

Leavings Gaps in Existing Insulation

Adding insulation in your attic stops conductive heat flow. Leaving even just a small space between the insulation and attic floor diminishes the material’s insulating ability. Fill small empty spaces and sections with insulation, making sure it is in full contact with the attic floor. Failure to address this issue can lead to heat loss during cold weather and heat gain during hot weather.
